It’s going to vary by car class, days of the week, if there are any area special events going on, location, etc. You apparently knew ahead of time what it was going to cost and should have taken these factors into consideration at that time. Was this for pleasure purposes or a necessity?

check ALL websites befire you get a car, and mostly, priceline – if you have the time, start very low – you never know what you can get.

Also, ALWAYS get it for whole days (2 days, even if you mean to return it in 1 day 11 hours – the hourly rate is much higher when you talk 6+ hours)

Some times car rental placed offer discounts for longer periods of time. I know when we rented a car for our honey moon, it was cheaper to rent it for the entire week then just a few days. You might want to check if they are having a weekend discoount and just keep it fort a few extra days you may get a cheaper price. I think they do this for those people who have no option, businesspeople who really only need the car for one day, that is where they make their money.

I don’t know of one website that only lets you rent and pick up cars from the airport. But when I’m in the Bay area and need a rental car, I usually try bidding on Priceline first. They only deal with reputable major car-rental agencies, and you can pick up at the airport.

If you want to shop around with independent car rental agencies, try Car Rental Express. Sometimes you have to pick up at the airport, but not always.

You can get better prices renting a car at the airport. I don’t know of one particular company that is cheaper than the others. If you live in Fremont why don’t you fly into Oakland?

It’s somewhat difficult to say which companies are offering the deals at that specific time. The best thing to do is contact the national rental companies individually and ask. Usually they welcome the one way deals, which is more expensive for the consumers but quite beneficial to the companies. Call Avis, Hertz and I know National and Alamo does one ways also.
